A Short History of The Golf Tee

Ever since the game of golf was conceived golfers required the ball to be raised when using a driver off the tee. In the beginning, a small pile of sand was scraped together and the ball located atop of it. In the first set of golf rules published in 1744 (“Articles & Laws in Playing at Golf”), the rules read that:

“your ball must be ‘teed’ from the ground.”

The scraping of sand together became cumbersome and two Scotsmen, naturally, named William Bloxsom and Arthur Douglas created portable tee and patented their design – British patent document (No. 12,941) is dated 1889.

Later an improved tee that penetrated the ground was designed and built by George Franklin Grant in 1899. George Grant did not produce any of his patented tees and Willian Lowell of New Jersey patented the one-piece wooden peg with a flared, concave head where you could position your ball.

Tees may not indicate the line of play and it is not permissible for the tee to influence the movement of your ball.

Golf Tee Basics

The elementary structure of the tee should let you insert it into the turf with little effort and have a head that will support the ball and prevent it from falling off but not to such an extent that the cup perimeter gets in the way after the ball is struck. The concave-shaped head is the most frequently employed form although pronged forks or tripod cups especially with plastic tees are now popular. This basic shape comes in a variety of colours and materials.

Producers of golf tees devote significant sums to produce a product that will provide golfers with an advantage through the use of a range of materials and adaptations of the basic shape.

Benefits achieved through these adaptations are tees that fight your slice, reduces friction, and materials that are biodegradable for protecting the environment.

When using a driver off the tee it is imperative that you use a tee to enable you to strike the ball while the driver is on the up to achieve more height and distance. When playing irons off the tee the raised ball position creates a better prospect for a clean strike and diminishes the odds of a thin or fat strike.

Most golfers take the tee for granted and pay little interest in what the tee that they use. On some short holes, many golfers tend to look for broken tees laying around to use rather than using one that is still of full size.

By paying more interest in the selection of a golf tee you can gain extra distance off the tee, possibly better accuracy, and reduce your score.

Materials Used For The Construction of Golf Tees

Wooden Golf Tees

Wooden golf tees are the most-used tees by all levels of golfers as the can be shaped and personalised to your preference and are biodegradable. Wooden tees can be printed on the shaft and the cup so enabling branding of the product. Very useful for golf events and to spread your message or logo to others.

Bamboo Golf Tees

There is a lot of differing opinions about whether bamboo golf tees are better than hardwood golf tees. Some suggest the hardwood golf  tees are less easily broken and therefore better for the environment and the pocket and other say the same for bamboo golf tees. Bamboo is also straightforward to grow and harvest while it is exceptionally eco-friendly and less costly than wooden tees.

Plastic Golf Tees

The use of plastic has become popular after the introduction of plastic in the use of everything even though it is not eco-friendly and takes decades to break down once it is in the ground. The major benefit gained from plastic tees is that they reduce the friction at impact with the ball and robustness as they don’t break easily but instead bend under stress.
