If you want to hit the golf ball further and keep it in bounds then you need to hit the ball on the sweet spot of the clubface whilst having the club face pointing to the desired starting line.Once you have these two elements on track you can then think about increasing the club head speed which is the topic of this article.
So many golf magazines and videos and teaching professionals talk about multiple golf swing mechanics which if you were to follow these you would be so confused you could never hit a golf ball well as the brain is processing so many thoughts. To try and simplify things a little consider the following.
Lets think for a minute about how you would jump in the air from a standing start. You most likely would bend your knees and squat down, perhaps draw your arms back behind you and then to jump, you would thrust your legs against the ground and swing your arm upwards in a joint effort to get into the air. The only reference point you have to push against is the ground and this is true for golf.
Now in golf you dont want to jump into the air as high as you can but you do want to build torque in your body that when released rotates your body and arms and hands to increase the clubhead speed. So the tension feeling you had when trying to jump high was mainly in the legs and the golf backswing should get you in a position where your legs are in tension but it only works if your posture is correct in the first place so lets take a look a this now.
Golf Posture
Here are some basic steps you need to follow. Pick some level ground first.
1/Hold the club (an iron is best) arms outstretched in front of you parallel to the ground.
2/Make sure you are standing upright and tall.
3/Bend from the hips keeping the legs straight until the clubhead touches the ground.
4/Relax the knees and elbows a touch.
When you address a golf ball you will need to carry out the above noting where to stand to get the middle of the clubface aligned with the golf ball.
So now you have the correct posture and you can tweak this to see how to build this into your pre shot routine.
Golf Backswing
Whilst in the correct posture we need a way to build torque in the body and tension in the legs. To do this turn your left shoulder (assuming a right handed golfer) towards the ground or think of turning your torso around your spine without coming out of posture. Turn as far as you can. If this is done correctly you should notice that your left knee has moved inward, your right hip has moved back and towards the target and your body weight has moved towards your right leg which is now in tension. You may also lose a little height with your head position dipping a little. This backswing position should feel really coiled and waiting to explode into action.
Golf Transition
To help ensure your downswing path is on plane at impact you need to decide which of the many options are to be adopted that suit you to start the golf downswing. There are many ways to do this but the most important is to find a way to move the initial weight from the right leg onto the left leg before impact. A number of tour players move their left knee to the target to start their downswing. Others drop their arms straight down before turning their body, another option is to bump the left hip towards the target. There are so many swing thoughts that can be tried and really it's an individual thing that you need to work on with help from a tutor if needed.
You need to find a way to first build this backswing tension so you feel really coiled and then a mechanism that unleashes this. The backswing element is so important as without this it does not really matter what you do on the downswing as you will not maximise your club head speed without the backswing being correct.
So the message is improve your backswing and get this tension build into your body which will then give you the platform you need to get more clubhead speed and it should help you to decide which transition method works knowing you have the stored energy ready to go. This is important as so many golfers are trying to find a downswing technique that gives more speed alone. Having the correct posture, backswing and torque energy stored and ready to go and then working on the transition and downswing will give you more clubhead speed.
